Fishing Report 3/7/22

Paulinskill River: 354 CFS
Flat Brook: 170 CFS

The bite has been slow but present on our local streams. There have been some small stones hatching mid day on the Paulinskill but not much action on top. Fish stonefly nymphs low and slow below an indicator to fish this hatch. When no hatch is present, I have been having luck on midges, size 20-24 in black, red, and brown. Occasionally you will run into a predominant midge hatch, in which case I like to throw a little size 18-20 Griffith’s Gnat with a size 22 midge emerger trailing off 18-24 inches of 6x flourocarbon.

Other than that, I have been hitting the wild trout streams for brookies and browns. I love fishing these streams with micro-streamers or a classic dry-dropper. The weather is just warming up enough to where the brook trout will be eating on top. They are opportunistic feeders but I like to throw any large parachute-style fly like a Purple Haze or an Adams. I also love a stimulator all year, especially when there are stoneflies hatching on the stream.

If they are eyeing the dry but not committing, try downsizing or clipping the tail off of your dry, Sometimes this minor adjustment can be the ticket.

As the weather continues to warm, keep an eye on those stonefly hatches as well as some little BWO hatches. There will be some precipitation this week so take advantage of the high flows!

Tight lines!
